Mildred...Face 2 of 29

29 faces

Day 2 of the 29 Faces challenge and I've got a silly gal today!  This is Mildred:

"Mildred refused to let a bad hair day ruin her stroll."

My goal for 29 Faces is not only to practice faces, but also to try new things.  With Mildred, I was looking at an awesome index card sent to me in the care package from Laura E.  The neat background was done by Laura, and I was looking at it when the shape of a face showed up...those great crazy hair shapes were the first thing I saw!  So I got my pencil and roughly sketched the outline, filled it in with gesso and painted Mildred into existence.  I'm super excited for the two washi tapes I happened to have (my washi collection is painfully small...and by that I mean more than ten, but less than I want!)  I think it looks like she's walking through the city with birds above her in the telephone wires!  So neat!

My husband walked by when I was taping her into Gregg (oh, my beloved Gregg!) and he says "That looks like Mr. Magoo."  I didn't know who that was!  For those of you who, like me, had no clue who that is, I give you Mr. Magoo:

After seeing his face, I had a vague recollection of seeing him before...No I didn't, I knew the name from the Leslie Nielsen live-action movie version, but I've never seen this guy before in my life...

I asked my husband why I would be aware of Mr. Magoo, since he was created in 1949 and turned into an animated series in the 60s (according to Wikipedia anyway)...I was born in 1983, this is a little before my time...  He was unimpressed with my sound reasoning and insisted that "Everybody knows who Mr. Magoo is!  He's like Tom and Jerry or The Jetsons or Bugs Bunny or (insert about twenty other cartoons), there is such a thing as reruns!!!"  This was followed by him staring at me incredulously for at least two and a half minutes, till I pretended to remember watching Mr. Magoo as a kid.  It was a lie...a terrible, terrible lie.

So maybe Mildred is Mrs. Magoo...a lot of cartoon characters do have alliterative names like that...Congratulations Mr. Magoo, I've found you a lady friend!

In addition to being day 2 of 29 faces, this is also Day 2 of my personal 30 posts in 30 days challenge.  I figured since I had so much come up last month, and I ended up not being able to reach my goal for Effy's blog-a-long, I would have my own personal challenge this month (aka another Sweet Red Clover do-over)!  If anybody wants to try to do 30 posts in 30 days along with me, please leave a link to your post in the comments section and I will be extremely honored!

  1. I'd love to join you later in the month Sweet Red - when we get back home from our trip ....It's almost impossible to get time alone when we're staying with people so I missed a lot of days at the end of Effy's challenge.

    Your faces are great :)

    1. Yay! I hope that you will! I had so much weirdness come up last month, and I was so annoyed that I didn't get my 30 posts in...I had to give myself a do-over! And then I though I can't be the only one who feels that way!

      Thank you! <3

  4. I am of the Mr. Magoo era myself, but I'm not sure Mildred is related to him. She has somewhat of a resemblance. I love it that she's not afraid or embarrassed by her strange hair. I wish I were so bold. Love her.

    1. It is a very fun technique! I think I will have to play with it more and see if I can get something less cartoon-y next time! I'm glad your going to try the 30 day challenge with me! It's a good time to do it, since we're already in for 29 days of faces...why not add just one more day and have two finished challenges under our belts! Good luck on the cell phone posting! <3 <3 <3

  6. Yes I also know Mr. Magoo. But to be honest I like Mildred better. Mr. Magoo was never my kind of guy, it was just a feeling. Mildred is a strong person, she doesn´t care what other people say. That makes her my kind of girl!!
    Cheers ASIL (almost sister-in-law)

    1. Thanks my ASIL! I think I like Mildred better too...when I was looking at Mr. Magoo's pictures online, he looked very grumpy in some of them! I don't care for a grumpy Magoo! Mildred's carefree attitude is much nicer! She seems like she'd be fun! <3 <3 <3

    1. I'll tell Mildred to think about finding someone new! :) You are not the only one who didn't care for Mr. Magoo! In some of the pictures online he looked very grumpy...Mildred would never stand for a sourpuss! Thanks! <3<3<3

  12. Mr Magoo always reminded me of Mr Sheen... Mildred reminds me of someone I'd like to be....No Fear and full of attitude. ;)

    1. I had to look up Mr. Sheen too! ...but he and Mr. Magoo could definitely be related...maybe they are brothers and one got the mother's nose and one got the father's!

Mildred is so happy you would like to be like her! She says being fearless and spunky is always a good choice...and I have to agree! <3

  13. sweets, she does have some "Magoo" in her genes. Maybe she is Mr. Magoo's great-grand-daughter, afterall, he was old and almost blind back in the 1960's. Today he would probably be about 120 years old. I think she is Mildred Magoo, the great-grand-daughter and heir to the Magoo throne.

Her hair is so wild and funny. I adore that little purple pill-box hat. Are the birds a washi tape? They're awesome!!!
    Hugs, Pamikins!

    1. Haha! You are right Pamikins! She must be heir to the Magoo throne...she has a bunch of money from the copyrights to the Magoo cartoons and that's how she could afford her snazzy pill-box hat!

The birds are washi tape...it's one of my favorite rolls! Big squish! <3 <3 <3

Thank you so much for the compliment! I had a fun time with Mildred, she's so silly! I totally agree that it's awesome to get to see everybody's work progress and to get to try new things or hone skills ourselves! <3 <3 <3
